Televisa consolidates itself as market leader in Mexico but has not the highest growth according to Dataxis

According to Dataxis’ new report, the Mexican Pay-TV market grew by 9% in the fourth quarter (4Q) of 2015, when compared to the same period of 2014. Furthermore, Pay-TV household penetration increased from 53% in 2014 to 56.8% in 2015. Even though Televisa is the group with the highest market share in the country, other corporations such as MVS Comunicaciones and Megacable Holdings have recorded higher organic growths.

By the end of 4Q 2015, Mexico’s main DTH operator Sky (Televisa) led the local industry with a 39.4% market share. It was followed by Dish Mexico (MVS-Echostar), Megacable and Cablemas (Televisa). According to Dataxis, DTH services accounted for 55.3% of the total Pay-TV households at the end of 2015, leading the list as the preferred network type. It was closely followed by Cable TV, while IPTV and MMDS (microwaves) had a very low share.

Due to the fact that several regulatory and political changes took place in Mexico during 2015, the realities of the Pay-TV market were shook and new expectations regarding the future of many actors arose. MVS and Megacable are two groups that recorded high organic growths and could be the focus of investing interest in the future. Furthermore, America Movil is once again awaiting a regulatory decision to see whether it can enter the Pay-TV market during 2016.
