Telefonica to launch in Peru the OTT Movistar Play and the converging STB Smart Deco


Spanish telecommunications company Telefonica announced it will launch in Peru the OTT Movistar Play and present Smart Deco, a wireless connectivity set-top box that converges television and internet. Both will be available by mid-year.


At the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2016, held in the Spanish city of Barcelona, ​​Telefonica also announced that it will boost their soccer mobile app Movistar Futbol to get from the actual 100,000 users to 500,000.


“Today we have 1.2 million Movistar TV users and the idea is to close 2016 with over 1.3 million, an 8% growth compared to 2015,” said the Director of Postpaid, Residential and Business of Telefonica in Peru, Jose Antonio Cassinelli, quoted by local daily Gestion. Besides, they hope to reach 200,000 Movistar Play users by the end of the year.


Telefónica already offers the Video On Demand (VOD) service in Latin America in countries like Brazil (Vivo Play), Argentina (On Video), Chile (Movistar Play) and Colombia (Movistar Video). In addition, they will launch VOD services and linear channels in seven new countries in 2016: Ecuador, Uruguay, Panama, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala and Nicaragua.
