OTTs are no substitute of Pay-TV in Brazil according to the Anatel

According to the National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) of Brazil, Over-the-Top (OTT) digital video services do not replace yet Pay-TV but rather complements it, reported the local website Tela Viva.

“In our view, it is too early for OTT video services to replace Pay-TV. It is obvious that this substitution has already occurred in other services such as instant messaging, but video platforms are more likely complementary. Is a very incipient market to be able to decide on taxes, all we can do is monitor it”, said the Superintendent of Competition of Anatel, Carlos Baigorri.

The regulator is fulfilling the realization of a General Plan for Competition Goals (PGMC) nationwide. “The PGMC will differentiate four areas of competence. The municipalities with the highest levels of competition will be deregulated. We are proposing a drastic reduction in regulations for cities where there is no kind of monopoly.”
