Digital platform security provider Irdeto sees OTT as “a niche market to explore” in Latin America, said to NexTV News Latam Gabriel Hahmann, Sales Director, Brazil and Southern Cone of the company.
“There is a growth of niche OTT platforms such as Playkids in Brazil, which was the first service of this type to use Irdeto’s solution in the region”, said Hahmann. Worldwide, the company now has around 20 OTT customers.
According to the executive, one of the advantages of Playkids is that, in addition to offering streaming, the platform allows users to download the content, so children can access the videos at any time.
In turn, Jorge Waitz, Regional Sales Director for Latam, said that, in addition to OTTs, there are still small and medium-sized enterprises digitizing their networks.
Regarding the deployment of 4K in Latin America, both Waitz and Hahmann considered that ultra HD is not a priority in the region right now, because there are many factors to be considered, such as the bandwidth required and the availability of 4K-compatible equipment. Waitz believes that Chile could be one of the first countries to adopt 4K equipment in the region.
Irdeto has headquarters in São Paulo, Brazil, and also has sales representatives in Argentina, Mexico more recently in Colombia, to serve the Andean market.
