Colombian pay TV operator Supercable adds Caracol HD

Supercable became the first pay TV operator in reaching an agreement with Caracol to offer Caracol’s HD channel on its lineup, El Espectador newspaper reported. The announcement came after the Superintendency of Industry and Commerce (SIC) ordered pay TV operators to refrain from broadcasting RCN and Caracol channels without prior authorization.

Currently, the Caracol HD is part of the DTT platform in Colombia. However, pay TV operators who want to offer the channel in their grids -in both HD version as SD- must request authorization from the company, and the same applies to RCN. This way, TV operators must pay a monthly fee per subscribers.

Supercable has a cable operation with fewer than 8,000 subscribers in a market with about 5.2 million customers at the end of Q116. Caracol and RCN maintain a long-standing conflict with the main operators – Claro (America Movil), Movistar (Telefonica), DirecTV, ETB and Une Tigo – which account for over 93% of the pay TV market.
